“Is My Child Gifted?” Parenting Class
…And if so, now what? Have you ever thought that your child might have abilities that are different than their age peers? Come and explore the world of gifted education. Define types of giftedness, analyze national and state definitions, clarify some gifted behaviors, and gain resources that can help with parenting and school decisions. This class best serves families of preschoolers through grade 3. The instructors are Pam McDonald and Molly Hammel (Greenleaf GTYS Specialist). Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm, April 5-26, 2018. $59 fee. Interested? You can sign up by going to the District 196 Community Education website: http://public.district196.org/ce/ Search “gifted” or code AIMCG-S1. Questions? E-mail Molly Hammel at [email protected]org.
Friday March 9 10-11:30am, Tuesday March 20 6:30-8pm, and Friday March 23 1-2:30pm Caribou in Prior Lake Lunds Coffee Chat. Come join SPAN Board members to ask questions to those who have “been there,” to talk about your child, or to socialize with other parents of gifted kids. Parents who have received an invitation for their child to attend SAGE are welcome to come to talk with SPAN Board members whose children have attended SAGE.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday January 16 in the WestWood Media Center. A panel of parents will discuss their kids’ experiences and answer questions.
We have set our meeting schedule for the school year and plan to include a number of more informal “coffee” meetings. Please see our schedule for more details. All are welcome at our meetings.
SPAN will not host any more meetings for the 2016-17 school year. Please send us an email at [email protected] if you would like to offer input as to topics for meetings for the next school year. You can always email us with questions or concerns.
Meeting minutes and speakers’ handouts from our October and November meeting have been posted. Look for them under the Meeting Minutes tab. Also, if you did not receive a copy of the Critical Thinking workbook shared at the November meeting, you may download a copy here.

We are looking forward to the 2016-17 school year! We are exploring various possibilities for subjects on which meetings will focus, including a panel of middle-school and high-school gifted students to share what they wish they knew earlier, a speaker on mindfulness, a meeting with the State gifted and talented coordinator, mental health issues in gifted kids, and executive function issues in gifted kids. Synergy Family Night will be back, likely in October. Stay tuned for details!
Thank you to everyone who made our 5th Annual Family Night a success! Some photos from the evening are on our Photos page.
